The only living boy in New York (2017) ****

Source: Imdb

I'm quite regretful that I wasted this coming of age love triangle drama on a train ride. This would have deserved to be enjoyed while being given my full attention, but I did not give it enough credit going by the title and plot line, which is why I selected it for the journey.
Anyway, the acting was superb. I expected nothing less from the cast of huge names such as Jeff Bridges and Pierce Brosnan, but Callum Turner held his own against them all, portraying just the right mix of innocence and maturity in his roll of a young man on the cusp of truly growing up. The chemistry between the characters was outstanding. You could feel the troubled teenage-like relationship between Thomas and his dad, as well as the crackling electricity between Thomas and Johanna. Everyone fit in their role perfectly, so kudos to the casting director! They invested in the right people and took a deserved chance on a new face.
The technical execution was almost arthousey, with a muted colour palette and gorgeous shot composition, though sometimes the lighting was questionable (most of the time simply beautiful, though) That said, the film might have benefited from a slightly more even editing with longer takes.
The conclusion of the story was so refreshingly unexpected and satisfying. I didn’t see where the story would lead. I kept thinking I had it figured out, but then something new came along every time. Great job!
4/5 Would watch again.
