Eighth Grade (2018) *

Source: Imdb
I was expecting something entirely different from this film that Bo Burnham made. As in, something funny. Instead this drama about a shy teenage girl growing up was... too real, I guess. And cringy. And awkward as fuck. So uncomfortable to watch, for two reasons: I feel like I was the same kind of ugly duckling in school, only I never really found my way into the in-crowd. Also, I wish I had had the support of social media or modern technology like Kayla does. When I grew up, there were no mobile phones, no youtube, no facebook. If you wanted to use the internet, you had to go to the library. It was very difficult to find people who shared your weirdness. In that regard, Kayla has it easier. Then again, social media is putting so much pressure on young people today.
From the technical side: great acting. Very natural. It felt very much like seeing real life unfold, which made it so hard to watch, I guess. However, on the big down-side, I was bored out of my skull for most of this. Real life does not have a plot or story arch like a movie should have, and this felt very much like a slice of real life.
So, for realism and because this is a fantastic snapshot of being a teenager in present day America (or any western country really), I would give 5/5. For entertainment value and wanting to watch this again: 1/5.
