Wow, this modern fairy tale from Sweden was definitely
something I haven’t seen before. While this story about a customs officer who
just doesn’t fit in did have a few predictable turns, overall, it was quite
original. The acting was great, though the two leads clearly struggled a bit
with their prosthetics. Nonetheless, they displayed enormous bravery in their
performances. The scrip also had an interesting approach to gender fluidity. I
like how the Swedes are just not that fussed about it all. Besides, they seemed
to fit an awful lot of story into the runtime. I felt like a lot was happening
here, without it ever feeling rushed.
Visually,
this was very gritty, but beautifully shot in an artless, frank way. It was
clearly shot on location, but at a reasonable budget with just a few sets. I
wonder about the animals, though. They can’t all have been real, but I guess
you can hire trained foxes... not so sure about elk, though.
All in all,
a great piece of work, engaging and shocking, and just the right amount of
open-ended. 4/5
