I saw this drama about the rivalry between scientists like
Edison and Tesla at the dawn of electricity despite the bad reviews and I was
suitably surprised to find a fairly entertaining and well-made film. I only
thought they were trying to put too much contant into it. It felt a bit overstuffed. I
have to say I wasn’t a huge fan of Benedict Cumberbatch as Edison in this, but
I enjoyed Nicholas Hoult’s slightly naive genius Tesla and Michael Shannon as
Westinghouse was exquisite. Sadly, Tom Holland’s incredible talent was wasted
in this project, though.
The plot seemed a bit splintered and with too many sub-plots, trying to explain the complicated inner lives of these brilliant men. Yet it transported a bit of a science and history lesson (albeit highly dramatised, I’m sure). It makes you admire the genius of inventors some 150 years ago, when there were still things to discover on a large scale.
The visuals were not great. I felt the editing was too fast and too many close-ups were used. Also, it appears they didn’t consider the lenses when choosing shot progression as the sides of the picture were often warped. The costumes and sets seemed a bit extravagant and the animation was serviceable at best. What was absolutely gorgeous, though, was the score by Benni Densi and Saunder Jurriaans. I’ve not heard that good an original score in a long time. To my great disappointment it appears to be unavailable for purchase.
All in all, a watcheable movie not at all as lukewarm as the reviews made it sound, but maybe they tried to pack a little too much into it. 3/5
