What a beautiful film! It made me sad
for all the things I missed out on, but also grateful not to have had to go
through other stuff growing up. The casting was superb. The actors all worked so well
as a loving family. The kids were absolutely amazing and it is inspiring to
watch their journey. It’s also creepy how much Mason reminds me of my brother
and I really hope that, while he was showing the rest of the family the grumpy
teenager side of himself, he was having the stimulating experience Mason was
having behind our backs.
As a writer
and director, this piece must have been incredibly difficult to pull together,
but the pacing and flow worked incredibly well. I also began to enjoy the
segues from age step to age step. Using the same actors really made them pretty
recognisable and defined the whole feel of this film.
The
cinematography was beautiful as well, and I loved how they wove in all those
signature elements of the respective time periods. Particularly the childhood
in the 90ies bit - with Coldplay, DBZ and Harry Potter.
All in all,
a gorgeous film with a bright and hopeful ending. 4/5 for nostalgia and
bittersweetness.
