The Lion King (2019) ***

Source: Imdb

I don’t know why I wanted to see this… probably nostalgic reasons. It did feel like a shot-by-shot remake of the old classic, only this time it was animated with photo-realistic animals. I am assuming the story is well-known to everyone. Surprisingly, I remembered it all even though I hadn’t seen it in 20 years. They only put in one or two new songs.
On thing that cannot be denied is that the animations were gorgeous and appeared photo-realistic in the details to the point where, during the sequence with the mouse, I thought that this is probably the future of nature “documentaries” (most of these animals will only be alive in this format in a couple of years, anyway). However, the visuals sometimes lacked credibility when looking at the movements of the animals, which seems oddly jarring since the visual realism is stunning throughout the movie but then there are a few jarring moments that stick out like sore thumbs. That said, the facial animations, the eyes and the fur or feathers looked stunning. The voice acting was very good, too, particularly young Simba.
The score was the original Hans Zimmer, only re-recorded, I’m guessing, and the songs were done by the actors, I think, not Elton John. Besides, the musical sequences were surprisingly short.
Anyway, I expected this to make me cry and it did, so I suppose they did a good job. It was a satisfying watch and the visuals were beautiful to look at. I wish I had seen this in 3D. It has a good, even pace as well.
3/5
