Abominable (2019) **

Source: Imdb
This animation film about a few kids helping a yeti find his way home was not as bad as it could have been, but not great either. Though they did have quite a lot of original ideas (though they seemed pretty random, lacking an overall concept), this still started to somewhat bore me after not even half the runtime. The visuals were just not enough to hold my attention. The characters were not particularly interesting and the main character was miscast as sounding much, much older than a teenager. Though the plot details were, at times surprising, the overall story line was predictable and lacked tension.

The quality of the animations was serviceable, but no more. It lacked the incredible detail of films like “How to train your Dragon” or “Wall-E” that I have come to expect of animation movies. This does not mean that there were no good shots at all, though. Particularly the scene with the fields of yellow flowers stands out as gorgeously lit and executed.

Lastly, the score by Rupert Gregson-Williams was very nice, though generic. I don’t know if I should give them points or subtract them for recycling Coldplay’s hit “Fix you” in a prominent place during the film, but they had some lovely soundtrack numbers as well.

All in all, an only mildly exciting film. I would not consider a re-watch, but I have seen worse. 2/5
