This drama about the beginnings of the Me-Too-era was a lot more captivating
than I though. They did not skimp on the cast, producing a star-studded film to
ensure it received the right amount of attention and was performed to a high
standard. Charlize Theron was extraordinary. I don’t think I have ever seen any
of her movies and thus, I had neither realised how good an actress she is, nor
did I ever notice how gorgeous she is. I’ve never watched anything with Margot
Robbie, but she was fantastic, acting with a subtlety and intensity that was
impressive. I didn’t think Nicole Kidman added a lot to the movie aside from
her character being essential to the story - Besides, her get-up was hideous
(that wig! OMG!) – but I’m sure her name was a huge draw for this important
project.
The writing
of this was a bit convoluted – at least there were too many names and
entanglements for me to follow entirely – but otherwise this film impressed
with tight storytelling and a sustained low-level tension that was masterfully
crafted. A sense of constant threat developed from the nature of the story: co-workers
and males in particular all become suspect. This was very well communicated.
The editing added the necessary pacing to keep this surprisingly interesting. I
would have expected this to be a movie to watch on the side, but it was actually
riveting and completely held my attention.
I would say
one of the better female rights films of recent years. 3/5 Important watching,
even though I doubt it would convince chauvinists and machos to try a change of
perspective.
