Adrift (2018)***

Source: Imdb

This adventure film about a young couple being shipwrecked in a storm looked a lot like "All is Lost", that Robert Redford movie of the same ilk – but somehow I enjoyed it much more, despite the cheesy story line (no matter if it’s true or not). Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin had good chemistry and pulled off the people in love act. The script was very average, though, using well-known tropes in a completely foreseeable way. That said, the actions of the main character(s) made a lot more sense than in "All is Lost". There were only one or two instances where I got frustrated, but I guess individuals in a high-stress situation like that make mistakes, so the erratic behaviour can be explained away.
Anyway, they had good sets, prosthetics and make-up, wardrobe, lighting, CGI,... all the visual departments were well-covered and the directing was very good as well. Though this could have come across a bit more snappy and tight, they did make an effort, editing this down to barely 90 minutes. A good choice. While by no means a thriller, it did keep me somewhat engaged.
3/5
